Football:
Israel is certainly
not known for its sporting achievements. |
The national football
team has come close to qualifying for several major
tournaments, but has always fallen at the last hurdle. In
the recent play-off game for The European Championship,
Israel lost 0-5 at home to Denmark. Locally, there is a
vibrant league, which is highly competitive year after year,
with no single team dominating. Jerusalem has a brand new
stadium which seats 21,000 spectators.

Basketball:
In
European terms, Israel is certainly a force to be |
reckoned
with. The National
team rarely misses the European Finals. At the team level,
Israel has one team that has dominated local league for the
past 20 years. Maccabi Tel-Aviv represents Israel year after
in the European League, and even won the trophy twice in
1977and 1980. Hapoel
Jerusalem is the country's second ranked team.
Running : Israel has plenty
of other sports enthusiasts. Running is a very popular
pastime. Jerusalem
has its own running club containing details of upcoming
competitions.
